The Tradition started in 1987
The Mayville Winter Festival, formerly know a the I.C.E Festival, began in 1987 when Donald Hogan, a 17 year Chautauqua Vacationlands Director had an idea to bring an ice castle to Mayville. I.C.E stood for Ice Castle Extravaganza and evolved over the years when a castle could not be constructed due to the weather. It came to incorporate many activities in the park, went through a couple of name changes, but one thing never changed - blocks of ice have always been harvested from the northern end of Chautauqua Lake.
